    The partnership with D. Maria II National Theatre contributes to reinforce the positioning of Grupo Ageas Portugal in the strategic cultural axis, and also serves as an opportunity to share moments and emotions with our Collaborators, our Clients and our Partners.

    Through this partnership, Grupo Ageas Portugal restates its “body and soul” commitment in another great cultural project and its diligence in making D. Maria II National Theatre to continue being a reference in the Portuguese cultural scenario and a reason of pride for us all with all the benefits that this partnership brings to our organization.

    Attracting new audiences

    The D. Maria II National Theatre was inaugurated in April of 1846, with the purpose of establishing Cultural house, making Theatre accessible to all. Since then, it has attracted and created new audiences, bringing to the population new cultural and artistic activities that raise aesthetic and criticism standards. In the 2017/2018 season it welcomed more than 100.000 people. In 2018 more 25.000 youngsters and children attended shows at D. Maria, 9.000 in the educational context.

      Date the theatre was legally founded. Almeida Garrett was instructed for building a National Theatre "in which national dramas could be performed in good conditions".

      After much controversy, the chosen site for final National Theatre was on the ruins of the Estaus Palace. It was only in 1842 that Almeida Garrett was able to begin contruction work.

      The most well known management may have been the Rosas e Brasão company, between 1881 and 1898, during wich they dared attempt to change the repertoire (the first performance of Shakespeare).

      For a long time, the Nacional Theatre was managed by companies of artists. After the establishment of the Republic, the National Theatre became known as the Teatro Nacional de Almeida Garrett.

      The longest management was that of Amélia Rey Colaço/Robles Monteiro, which lasted from 1929 to 1964.

      The Nationa Theatre was the stage of a raging fire that destroyed the whole building, with the exception of its external walls and main entrance.

      The building which we nowdays know, which preserves the original neoclassical style, was totally reconstructed and reopened only in 1978.

      The Teatro Nacional D. Maria II was transformed into a public company with public capital, and is now managed by its own administration and subject of the Ministries of Finance and Culture.

    Eunice Ageas Network

    Grupo Ageas Portugal amplifies its scope of intervention in the performing arts through the Eunice Ageas Network.

    The Eunice Ageas Network, a partnership, assumes a relevant part in bringing theatre to the country, to areas and people that otherwise would not have the possibility of access to it. This nationwide project promoting the circulation of D. Maria II shows, in association with municipalities that want to provide their communities with a reinforced offer of quality theatre and promote the discover new acting talents.
