A pilot project for the prevention of diabetes, a chronic disease with serious health risks, will take place in 14 pharmacies of Gondomar. Under the motto "It is possible to prevent diabetes... And to live with it!", from July 1st, users of the municipality will have free access to a pharmacy screening which will allow to signal people at higher risk of type 2 diabetes
"Diabetes is one of the biggest public health problems of the XXI century. The enormous prevalence makes it urgent to fight this scourge through early diagnosis and innovation in the medical and pharmaceutical monitoring of the risk population”, alerts the President of the National Association of Pharmacies, Paulo Cleto Duarte.
Directed towards people with or above 45 years old and undiagnosed with diabetes, the pilot project stipulates that the highest-risk cases identified will have access to two medical appointments and further exams, when deemed necessary, through providers of Rede Médis whom adhere to the initiative, allowing to access your overall health in regards to diabetes. All participants will also benefit from information about the disease and healthy lifestyles, strengthening their general knowledge about health and diabetes prevention.
"The context of diabetes in Portugal, with the high number of people it affects, aggravated by the scenario of a growing aging population, makes it an unavoidable topic. This is an initiative of social responsibility that aims to raise awareness, and take action, allowing participants to better understand their health status regarding diabetes. Prevention and early detection of risk are the key elements to allow a reduction in the prevalence of the disease", refers Eduardo Eduardo Consiglieri Pedroso, CEO of Médis.
The project is funded in the scope of social responsibility by Médis and ANF, is free of charge for users and will be available in adhering pharmacies for 6 weeks.
