Ageas Conference "To live Culture"

In 2018, we celebrated an important landmark in Portuguese culture: a partnership with Porto's Coliseum, giving rise to Ageas Porto Coliseum.

Now, after one year and many joint-actions, we want to celebrate this union with Porto’s historic showroom. Having culture one of our strategic axis, we believe that this partnership has allow to increase the access of society to musical or theatrical events.

On May 9th we celebrated the anniversary of this partnership with two events: the last Living Well Conference, in association with Expresso newspaper, where we had two panels discussing the importance of culture, and an Open Day.

Steven Braekeveldt opened the last conference of the Living Well cycle, inviting the audience to reflect about culture and its relevance for society.

Rui Moreira (President of Porto’s City Hall), Inês Simões (Corporate and Brand Communication Manager of Grupo Ageas Portugal), Joana Garoupa (Communication and Brand Director of Galp) and Álvaro Covões (Everything is New) discussed the importance of private investment in culture. Besides the unanimous opinion of how essential it is to democratize access to culture – in all areas, the debated focused in statistics: haver we having a cultural disinvestment?

The first panel concluded that there is a need for training among youngsters, and the certainty that we have to rewrite the story that our culture wants to tell.

After a musical interlude, by Miguel Araújo, we chose to think about the future and the challenges that culture faces. For example: does Spotify provides us the same experience as a live concert?

Tiago Rodrigues (Artistic Director of D. Maria II National Theatre), Roberta Medina (Better World), Eduardo Paz Barroso (President of Ageas Porto Coliseu) and Miguel Araújo (Singer and Composer) agreed on the need of restructuring the cultural offer. There is a need to instigate culture in children and Tiago Rodrigues shares some projects that the Theatre has created, in order to invite the community inside their premises. Just like Mrs. Alzira whom, living 150 meters away from the D. Maria II National Theatre, for over 50 years, have never been inside the Theatre – and today everybody knows her by-name, due to how often she visits it.

The CEO of Grupo Ageas Portugal wrapped the morning, with one question: will we face new forms of access to culture – how can we adapt?
